Harmon Industries Wins Two Light Rail Transit Projects

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (October 7, 1997) -- Harmon Industries Inc., announces that it has been awarded two contracts totaling $5.4 million for signaling projects on the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) light rail transit system.

The UTA is implementing a 15-mile light rail transit (LRT) line that will connect downtown Salt Lake City to suburban areas to the south in anticipation of the 2002 Olympic Games. The LRT line will parallel Interstate 15 and State Street. Additionally, the LRT line is scheduled to operate at-grade on city streets in the downtown area and in a railroad right-of-way, which is owned by the UTA, to the suburban community of Sandy.

The new system is expected to transport more than 20,000 passengers a day and will include 17 state-of-the-art stations.

"The improvements that the UTA is making will help support the city as host to the Olympics in 2002," said Björn E. Olsson, president and chief executive officer of Harmon Industries, Inc. "We expect this high-profile project to sustain Harmon's strong reputation in the transit industry."

Under a separate contract, Harmon will provide grade crossing controls, interlockings and block signaling. Both of these transit projects are currently in production and are expected to be complete in 1999 with passenger service projected to begin early in the year 2000.
