Harmon Awarded Brazilian Contract
BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (Tuesday, August 19, 1997) -- Harmon Industries Inc., a leading supplier of signal and control equipment for railroad and rail transit systems throughout North America and the world, announced it has been awarded a $2.3 million contract with Cia Vale Do Rio Doce (CVRD) of São Luis, Brazil.
CVRD will upgrade their existing train control system to Harmon's on-board cab signaling system, Ultra-Cab II. The Harmon Ultra-Cab system will detect coded cab signals from the rails and support both automatic train stop (ATS) and automatic train control (ATC) functions, such as speed and braking control of the trains. This work follows a previous contract, for which Harmon released and shipped wayside, train control and track circuit equipment to the CVRD during the second quarter of 1997.
CVRD provides rail service for transportation of iron ore from the Carajas mines to the shipping port of São Luis in northern Brazil. CVRD also provides limited passenger service over the 588-mile railway.
"We are quite pleased with this extension of our ongoing business with CVRD," said Björn E. Olsson, president and chief executive officer of Harmon Industries, Inc. "It demonstrates Harmon's continued leadership in on-board cab signaling systems on a global basis."
