Besides the "Show Me" state motto, we are most famous for being the location of the Old Drum trial where the contemporary reference for saying "Man's Best Friend" was reborn. The statue of Old Drum, located on our courthouse lawn, pays tribute to Charlie Burden's best friend, his hound, who was killed by a neighbor in 1869. Burden sued for damages and through a series of trials, finally appeared before the Missouri Supreme Court. His lawyer, George Graham Vest won the case by his delivery of a long, poetical tribute for Old Drum and dogs everywhere. The tribute focused on how even a dear friend can turn against us, but a dog remains by its master's side, a faithful friend even unto death. Whiteman AFB, ten miles to the east, is home to the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Frequently seen flying the surrounding sky, the Stealth is an awesome vision, even after repeated sightings. Powell Gardens, an 835-acre botanical garden, is located just 20 miles west. Lakes abound with Truman Lake just 30 miles south, and the Lake of the Ozarks within a 2-hour drive. We are close to Kansas City, the "City of Fountains." With the Country Club Plaza, Worlds of Fun, riverboat and riverside casinos, Chiefs and Royal's Stadium, and shopping galore, Kansas City is a captivating place to visit The fast growing country music extravaganza of Branson is just 3-hours south, and Bass Pro Headquarters is located on the way, in Springfield, Missouri.
